Cathedral of Palma de Mallorca
The majestic Cathedral of Palma de Mallorca, known as "La Seu", is the most important religious building in the Balearic Islands. This Gothic masterpiece was built on the shores of Palma Bay, overlooking the sea, on top of the Roman and Renaissance walls that once protected the city. It is the only Gothic cathedral with this distinctive feature.
Its construction began in 1229, following the conquest of the island by the Crown of Aragon. King James I ordered the demolition of the Great Mosque to build a grand cathedral dedicated to Saint Mary. According to tradition, during the sea crossing to Mallorca, a violent storm broke out, and the king vowed to construct a cathedral in her honor if they were spared.
Work continued until 1601, with further modifications extending until 1904. In 1931, it was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument. La Seu also boasts the largest rose window in the Gothic world (13 meters in diameter) and one of the tallest naves among European Gothic cathedrals (45 meters high).
